Glass making has deep roots in the north east, the modern industry in Sunderland dates to the 1690’s and records of stained glass production go back even further to 674AD and the building of Monkwearmouth monastery.
Dunelm Glass has carried on that tradition, operating as a company itself for more than 30 years, the skills and expertise of the team was originally drawn from the factories on the banks of the river Wear essentially Jobling Glass and Corning Ltd who had a huge presence in the North East until recently. As manufacturing declined in the UK, Dunelm diversified into the crystal and glass decorating marketplace, whilst still keeping the glassmaking skills alive producing borosilicate industrial glassware and creating glass sculptures for the gift market.
Having come full circle we now plan to launch a new and innovative high end scientific glassware range. After serving an apprenticeship with Dunelm Glass in the 1980’s our technical director Neil Davison embarked on a journey to North America to work within the high precision glassware scientific research and development industries. He is a world renowned expert in the field of ICP glassware, designing and developing quartz and borosilicate products. Neil has now returned to his native North East to once again team up with Dunelm Glass to launch Dunelm Scientific.
With the existing infrastructure and skill base plus the expertise brought by Neil the opportunity to become Europe’s only manufacturer of ICP glassware consumables was quickly identified.
Our aim is to put the North East back on the map of glassmaking with a quality, innovative product range.
